Backing Up SharePoint 3.0 Sites using SharePoint Designer
I have a SharePoint 3.0 site with many sites below it.  In SharePoint Designer if I click on the top site and the proceed to do a back up will I get everything from the other sites also?

This is a bad idea - only works for very small and non-complex sites.  I would use STSADM command line tool to do a -o backup or -o export... or look at a third-party backup solution.  There is also a backup GUI in the Central Admin / Operations tab if you are not a fan of command line.

Have you checked out the codeplex download for SUSHI?

"The backup feature in Sushi allows you to create manual or scheduled automatic backups of SharePoint. The SUSHI backup feature is simply a wrapper around the STSADM.exe -o export -url <sharepoint url> command. SUSHI gives you a way to easily build the commandline command without having to open up the console window. SUSHI also allows you to schedule regular backups that will run automatically.
